Back in ActionGeneral Hospital fans were dealt the kind of shock that EKG paddles could never deliver when it was revealed that Ryan Paevey was returning to the soap seven years after being (cough) killed off as Nathan West. Now, as his surprising storyline begins to unfold, let’s look to the past for hints of what the future holds.
In the Beginning
As 2013 hit the exit, Paevey passed through the entrance as Nathan arrived in Port Charles and sublet Maxie Jones’ apartment — just as she was leaving on vacation. Don’t worry, though; that would hardly be the last that they saw of one another.
Playing Detective
In Maxie’s absence, Nathan did his damnedest to find out who’d nearly killed his sister Nina Reeves. Her husband Silas Clay was his No. 1 suspect, followed by the doctor’s mistress, Ava Jerome. But it turned out that neither of them was the guilty party.
Mamma Mia
Nathan and Nina’s Mommie Dearest Madeline Reeves had drugged Silas’ wife years earlier in order to kill her unborn child. Not only did she fail at that, we’d later learn, Nina survived, too. Abby Cunningham would have never put up with such shoddy scheming!
That’s a No-No
Not until Nathan came thisclose to sleeping with Britt Westbourne was Madeline forced to reveal that she was not really his mother, her twisted sister Liesl Obrecht was. And since Liesl is also Britt’s mother… Yeah, it was a really good thing that the siblings hadn’t hooked up.
Full House
When Maxie returned from her Eat Pray Love getaway with a new boyfriend, annoying Levi Dunkleman, tensions flared. With good reason, Nathan smelled a rat. But it would be a while before he was able to prove to Maxie that his nose knew, so to speak.
‘I Don’t’
Maxie was all set to marry Levi — as if! — when Nathan crashed the ceremony to reveal that the groom was the son of her mom Felicia’s long-ago fiancé and had stolen a family heirloom as part of a harebrained revenge plot. Levi made off with Maxie and matron of honor Lulu Falconeri but didn’t get far.
Unhappy Father’s Day
Rescuing Maxie, Nathan himself was kidnapped by Victor Cassadine, who was perfectly willing to kill him until Liesl blurted out that — surprise! — they were father and son. Later, to keep Victor from revealing that he wasn’t really Nathan’s dad, Liesl shot and killed him. (Or so we thought.)
Whatever Happened to…
As for Levi, he as well as his nefarious father Peter Harrell were killed… which left Nathan and Maxie to share their first kiss in a room with a stiff. And they say romance is dead!
The Road to True Love
After all that, you’d think that Nathan and Maxie would have earned a little honeymoon period. But nah. First, they clashed when she helped JV mobster Johnny Zacchara flee Port Charles. Then, Maxie’s ex Damian Spinelli — with whom she has a daughter, Georgie — returned, hoping to reunite.
Burned by an Old Flame
In 2016, Nathan and Maxie bumped up against another huge obstacle when his onetime wife of convenience Claudette Beaulieu showed up in Port Charles with his (?!?) daughter, Charlotte. But every other word Claudette said was a lie. Charlotte was really the offspring of Valentin Cassadine and Lulu (through circumstances too bizarro to detail here!).
And They Lived Happily Ever After… Briefly
In 2017, Nathan finally managed to make Maxie his bride. But since she was called away to Portland for work, they might as well have honeymooned separately. Could these two never get a break?!?
Bad Advice
While Maxie was away, Nathan inadvertently became the face of Nurse Amy Driscoll’s popular Ask Man Landers advice blog. Somehow the two of them made it out of that mess without being charged with fraud!
‘Where Are All My Father’s Day Cards?!?’
Upon learning that Maxie was expecting, Nathan looked into Victor’s medical history… in so doing, prompting Liesl to confess that yeah. Victor wasn’t his father, Britt’s dad Cesar Faison was. And if Victor was nobody’s dream dad, Faison was an absolute nightmare!
Till Death Do Us Part
Reporter Lulu suggested doing a story on Nathan as Faison’s secret son to lure the villain out of hiding and bring him to justice. The plan worked… maybe too well. Faison resurfaced alright, but in rescuing Maxie from him, Nathan was fatally shot.
The Next Generation
When Nathan and Maxie’s son was born, she called him James — Nathan’s given name. She was then plunged into further horrors upon discovering that new beau Peter August was Nathan’s half brother and every bit as malevolent as their father!
Drop Dead, Gorgeous
Peter was eventually put on ice. And so was her subsequent romantic interest, Austin Gatlin-Holt. (We still don’t know who killed him!) Thankfully, her next beau fared better.
Reunited, and It Feels So… Oh Dear
Yup. Spinelli finally got his second chance with Maxie. And they’d still be happily cohabitating if she hadn’t slipped into a coma.
That’s Making an Entrance
In 2025, Lulu pitched in when she saw an accident on the side of the road. And whad’ya know? The unconscious passenger who was taken to General Hospital just happened to be a dead ringer for Nathan.
‘I’d Know Those Abs Anywhere’
Shortly, it was determined that the John Doe in the ER was, in fact, Nathan. But how? That question wouldn’t be answered right away.
What’s Next
“This go-round is definitely going to be wildly different than the last one was,” Paevey tells TV Insider. “We’re going to stir the pot. I wouldn’t come back for something vanilla. It’s going to be a blast.”
