Here’s why Emmerdale isn’t on tonight after jaw-dropping John cliffhanger

Last night’s Emmerdale left viewers on the edge of their seats when John Sugden jumped into a vast gorge, taking his husband Aaron Dingle down with him.

But fans will have to wait to discover the pair’s fate, as the soap won’t be on our screens today.

In a change to the regular schedule, Emmerdale will not be airing at 7.30pm on ITV1 tonight, and the early release episode won’t be available to stream on ITVX either.

Fortunately for soap fans, the football won’t be too disruptive this week and Emmerdale will return to our screens in its usual 7.30pm slot tomorrow (10 September). Thursday and Friday’s instalments will also air as normal.

After being confronted by his brother Robert Sugden, John was faced with yet another problem as he spotted Aaron searching for Mackenzie Boyd in the woods.

John tracked Aaron to the edge of a huge ravine, where he tried to come up with a cover story to explain his sinister actions. However, when Robert appeared on the scene, furious John was reminded of Aaron’s recent betrayal.

In an act of revenge, the medic told the police that Robert was threatening to kill both him and Aaron. He then locked his arms around his husband before jumping into the gorge.

Will either of them survive the fall, or could Robert be facing another prison sentence?

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
